Sensory Overload in Autism — What It Is and How to Help Your Child

Your child covers their ears at the sound of a blender. They refuse to wear certain fabrics. They melt down completely in a shopping mall. You have probably been told they are "just being difficult."
They are not. They are experiencing sensory overload — and it is one of the most misunderstood aspects of autism.

*What Is Sensory Overload?
Most brains automatically filter out irrelevant sensory information — background noise, the feel of clothing, the hum of a light. For many autistic individuals, this filtering system works differently. Stimuli that others barely notice can be genuinely painful or overwhelming.
When too much sensory information hits the brain at once, the result is a sensory meltdown. Unlike a tantrum, a meltdown is not about wanting something. It is a neurological response to being overwhelmed.

*Common Sensory Triggers
-Loud or overlapping sounds — crowds, music, machinery
-Bright or flickering lights
-Certain food textures or temperatures
-Clothing tags, seams, or specific fabrics
-Strong smells
-Being touched unexpectedly

*What Helps
-Reduce stimulation — lower lights, reduce noise, create quiet space
-Give advance warning before transitions or new environments
-Create a predictable daily routine
-Allow sensory tools — noise-cancelling headphones, fidget toys, weighted blankets
-Work with an occupational therapist who specialises in sensory processing

At Abhay's Rainbow Kids Foundation, our occupational therapists work specifically on sensory processing with every child in our programmes. We are also building Greater Noida's first dedicated sensory room.
